Dell today began construction on a manufacturing facility here on a 189-acre site in the region's Alliance Science and Technology Park.
The 527,000-square-foot facility - Dell's third U.S. manufacturing site - is scheduled to open in the fall and employ 1,500 people within five years. The North Carolina facility will produce Dell's market-leading OptiPlex and Dimension desktop computers, and adds to Dell's considerable U.S. manufacturing presence in Middle Tennessee and Central Texas.
Dell commemorated the beginning of construction with a ground-breaking ceremony today involving local and state partners who assisted Dell with the Piedmont Triad site. North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley and Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines joined Dell representatives at the ceremony.
"Dell has an aggressive timetable to begin production at this facility, and we appreciate the support and professionalism the community and our partners have brought to this project," said Ro Parra, senior vice president, Dell Americas. "This new factory is critical to meeting the needs of the increasing number of Dell customers who live in the eastern United States."
Travis Simpson, recently named vice president of manufacturing operations, will serve as lead for the new facility. In this role, he will manage its day-to-day operations.
The North Carolina location will add to Dell's other U.S. manufacturing operations in Austin, Texas, and Lebanon, Tenn., where the company produces its PowerEdge servers, PowerVault and Dell?EMC storage products, and OptiPlex and Dimension desktop computers, primarily for customers in North America. Globally, Dell has manufacturing facilities in Limerick, Ireland; Penang, Malaysia; Xiamen, China; and Eldorado do Sul, Brazil.
