Fighting Your Age: Doctors and Fitness Trainers Team up to Make People Over from head to toe.

(2006-01-13) Ron Holland, CMPT

Personal fitness trainers and medical professionals team up to fight the effects of aging. At one center in Tucson, Arizona, clients can tone their bodies and lose weight with personal training, be evaluated for hormone replacement therapy, get a laser peel, add porcelain veneers or cosmetic dental whitening, or even get a facelift... All in the name of age management

Fighting age is not purely an aesthetic endeavor any more. As more baby boomers are discovering, the fight against age is important not just to look better, but to live longer, live healthier, and improve quality of life. And as the appeal of the “Extreme Makeover” catches on, one Tucson Medical Facility has combined all the services needed to provide Northwest Tucson with its own one-stop Makeover Shop.

A team of Northwest Tucson doctors, personal trainers, and cosmetic dentists have consolidated efforts to provide comprehensive programs to make Tucson younger, healthier, and more fit and beautiful. At La Medica Plaza in Northwest Tucson, clients can find a variety services to improve health, fitness, and beauty – and fight the effects of aging. The professional Makeover Team in the northwest medical plaza provides high-end services to help Tucsonans fight the aging process, including: personal fitness training, dermatology, cosmetic surgery, laser treatments, cosmetic dentistry, and even hormone replacement therapy.

Ron and Jana Holland, owners of SWAT Personal Training (Strength Wellness Athletic Training, LLC) are the newest members of the age management team. The Hollands and their team of personal fitness trainers have joined anti-aging specialist Dr. Frank Comstock, M.D., to offer medical-based fitness, nutrition, and age management services. “We are finding that more and more clients are seeking personal training services because they know that it can improve the quality of their lives and their overall health and wellness,” Holland says. “For most of our clients, being fit isn’t about having a bikini-ready body. Instead, it’s about being strong, fit, and healthy…. Living longer, and living a healthier lifestyle.”

The average client at SWAT Personal Training is female, over the age of 45, and interested in improving core strength, balance, and managing weight as they age. Holland says, “Our clients want to live longer, and feel better. They are looking for solid nutritional guidance, and fitness instruction that keeps in mind their individual limitations and needs as their body ages.”

SWAT Fitness programs often begin with a consultation with anti-aging Specialist Dr. Frank Comstock, M.D., who administers a body composition and bone density test using DEXA Scan technology, known to be the most accurate assessment method in the field. “One of the advantages of our facility having a Doctor on staff,” Holland explains, “is that clients can consult with a Doctor who understands the aging process and the unique needs of their body as they age.”

After reviewing the results of the DEXA bone density and body composition tests with a patient, the Doctor may recommend that the client have blood work done to test hormone levels and thyroid function. The doctor may determine that there is a need for medication, a specialized nutrition plan or possibly even hormone replacement therapy. “Often,” explains Holland, “fitness clients who are concerned about weight gain have medical issues that when addressed properly, can make their exercise and nutrition programs more effective, and can assist in managing energy levels and motivation.”

And motivation is another thing that SWAT Fitness understands. In addition to providing personalized exercise supervision, SWAT also offers life coaching to address the other issues that often accompany aging and weight issues. Life Coach Jana Beutler Holland, M.Ed., says, “For many people, weight is as much an emotional issue as a physical one. People who don’t have a strong sense of internal motivation or confidence find themselves giving up before they get the results they seek.”

A former therapist, Life Coach Beutler-Holland believes that addressing exercise and nutrition is only part of the wellness and anti-aging puzzle. “For many people, the challenge of losing weight, fighting age, and making lifestyle changes isn’t the lack of knowledge or willpower. It’s about developing skills of tenacity, resilience, and mental attitude.” Beutler-Holland works with clients on issues such as goal setting, overcoming obstacles, identifying negative thought patterns, and getting through the inevitable plateaus that accompany any life style change. Beutler-Holland believes that having a life coach provides accountability, support, and encouragement – which are what most people who fail at keeping resolutions lack.

And while SWAT Personal Training is working on the body and mind, to further fight the effects of aging, clients who desire a more youthful appearance can visit Skin Spectrum, a dermatology practice in the same building as SWAT, specializing in cosmetic procedures that improve the texture and appearance of the skin. Drs. Comstock and Pai at Skin Spectrum routinely perform procedures such as laser surgery, leg vein treatment, laser resurfacing, Botox, and injectable fillers such as Restylane for clients looking for the Fountain of Youth.

If that doesn’t do the trick, then cosmetic surgery may be an option. In the suite next to Skin Spectrum, Dr, Mikel Lo, MD, of About Faces Cosmetic Surgery offers elective aesthetic surgery including threadlifts, upper and lower eyelid lifts, and liposuction.

And to complete the picture, Dr. Gordon Roediger of Desert Dental Arts in the same building offers cosmetic dentistry. Teeth whitening, alignment, and dental implants are but a few of the services offered at the Desert Dental Arts facility.

If your New Year’s Resolution is to improve your health and take better care of yourself then you might try getting trained, analyzed, shrinked, nipped, tucked, lasered, and lifted at 6127 N. La Cholla in Tucson, Arizona. But it doesn’t come cheap. The average price of a makeover, including personal training, laser treatments, cellulite reduction, botox, and life coaching? Only happy clients will tell...
