The traditionally Roman Catholic country of Spain today legalised same-sex marriages, in defiance of conservatives and clergy in the country. The bill was passed 187-147 in the Congress of Deputies, making it law.

Spain’s prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said that “We are not the first, but I am sure we will not be last. After us will come many other countries, driven, ladies and gentlemen, by two unstoppable forces: freedom and equality.”
