McCullough Receives Fulbright Appointment for Egypt Study

(2005-04-06)

Samford assistant professor of French Mary McCullough has received an appointment to the 2005 Fulbright-Hays Seminar Abroad Program for summer study in Egypt. She will spend July taking part in a seminar on "Multiple Perspectives on the Middle East, the Arab and Islamic Worlds."

The seminar offers U.S. educators an opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of historical, social, cultural and contemporary affairs facing Egypt. It also supports study in individual projects by participants. Dr. McCullough will focus on the history of feminism and the women’s rights movement in Egypt and how this pertains to the wearing of the Islamic veil.

The program is sponsored by the Fulbright Commission and the U.S. Department of Education. The five-week seminar--based in Cairo--includes lectures, discussions, cultural and social activities and field trips to sites such as Luxor, Aswan, the Suez Canal, Alexandria and other areas.

McCullough plans to incorporate the research she will conduct in Egypt into her Cultural Perspectives and World Languages and Cultures courses. A Samford faculty member since 2001, she holds the bachelor of arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Michigan State University.
