Melbourne, Florida – A patent for systems that predict earthquakes and for methods of employing such systems was awarded to Science Horizons, Inc. from the United States Patent and Trademark Office on March 22, 2005. With its patented technology, Science Horizons intends to identify the acoustic emissions that occur prior to an earthquake to determine when and where an earthquake will occur. "We are excited about what this technology will deliver," explained J. Theodore Cherry, PhD, President of Science Horizons, Inc. "When properly processed, data produced from our system should be capable of predicting the time an earthquake will occur, the magnitude and location of the quake, as well as its probability. The potential benefit to the world's population is significant."
Best known for its success in supporting the detection of nuclear tests, Science Horizons has its seismic, hydroacoustic, and infrasound data acquisition systems installed and certified worldwide to send data to the U.S. National Data Center and the United Nations Data Center. "Our commercial product is the only proven system capable of providing this information," said Cherry.
Science Horizons will use its critical, patented technology to predict earthquakes. To prove its viability, Science Horizons intends to establish three demonstration test sites in order to predict at least one magnitude 4.0 or greater earthquake during the first year of operation.
Science Horizons, Inc. is the leading manufacturer of data acquisition systems that support national security. Science Horizons was founded in 1984, with corporate headquarters in Licking, Missouri, and Engineering and Production offices located in Melbourne, Florida.
